Explore real-life themes —such as fighting fears or learning to love yourself—on the mat through postures and breathing exercises and meditation practice. Yogis will begin to take ownership of their practice, earning wrist bands when they accomplish new tasks and build on their knowledge of yoga.
Yoga Meets Science
Yoga Meets Science was born out of a program Yoga Playhouse created for South Mountain School in South Orange. The 10-week class marries hands-on science experiments with yoga practice, allowing children to learn about themselves and the world around them. Here’s an example of how it works: When conducting a science experiment that involves skewering a balloon without popping it (yes it’s possible if done gently) children can learn about elasticity and the behavior of long-chain polymers. After experiencing the gentle-strength required to separate the balloon’s polymers, students explore using this same kind of strength to accomplish Crow pose. Now students can consider other areas where this blend of strength and restraint might be helpful — such as when dealing with conflict or when taking on a leadership role. The weekly hour-long class for 7-to 13-year-olds will spark a child’s curiosity and foster their ability to make connections.
